Welcome to the New Website – Black Cat Lover
Hello and welcome to my new website that I launched. I am a huge lover of black cats. I have owned cats all of my life of many different colors and types. My first cat we owned when I was a young girl was an orange cat. My mother rescued the cat after her parents farm had a fire and all of the farm cats scattered except one which was hanging around, so Mom rescued it and in the car ride home, it was discovered that my father was allergic to cats. He never owned a cat before, so he had no idea, but in the car ride home, he started sneezing and his eyes turned red and started watering. My Dad made a comment about the cat being “like a plague” because of his allergy symptoms he was having. Being a young girl, around three years of age, I said “That’s his new name – Plague!” I was 3 years old. I had no idea what plague was or what my father was talking about. I just know he referred to the cat as being “plague” and so that was the cat’s name. We had Plague for over 15 years before he passed away. Even though my late father was allergic, he learned to love cats and just put up with his allergies throughout my childhood. My entire family are all animal lovers.
Presently, we have Midnight. She was born in the house we currently live. My mother was the Midwife during the birth. My parents had Oreo who was a black and white tuxedo cat and Oreo was a stray that came into my parents yard and adopted them. When it became apparent that Oreo was going to be a part of the family, my mother took Oreo to the vet to be spayed. She was told by the vet, “Oh she has some scaring down there, so she is already spade”. Well, a few months later there was ten pieces of evidence to the contrary. Midnight was one of those “pieces of evidence”.
I have been a huge advocate of cats my entire life and with having been owned by Midnight who is now 11 years old , I have become in love with black cats, because they are so gorgeous and sleek and sweet. With all of the stereotype surrounding black cats, I had to design a website that helps to dispel all of those ancient old myths about black cats and give the reader some facts, thus encourage people to go to their shelter and adopt a black cat, because I guarantee they will never regret that decision.
So, please feel free to stay connected and bookmark this website, because I will be developing regular posts and updates to this website. You may also sign up for the Black Cat Newsletter. I am very excited for this new website as it launches around the same time as the new year begins. So happy 2017 everyone and please give your cat(s) a kitty cuddle for me.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
Hi, what a nice idea for a website you had.
I can totally relate to your father, since I’m also allergic to cats but I just don’t seem to be able to stay away from them. My mother has three cats; for some reason they are totally in love with me, and when I’m with them I forget all the breathing problems I may have later. Sometimes my allergy manifests immediately, other times it doesn’t come out at all, and I’ve never been able to figure out why.
Anyway, long live the black cat! lol
Hi Sergio:
That is a nice story you shared about being allergic to cats and your mother’s cats just are totally in love with you and wish to be with you and how you completely forget all about any allergy symptoms you may suffer from down the road. Yes, my father was very allergic but it did not stop him from loving our four legged friends. Midnight our cat chose my father as “her favorite” and so she too would snuggle with him and he did not mind nor care about the breathing and sneezing and watery eyes he would get from it.
Thanks for sharing your story and yes, long live the Black Cat……
Sincerely,
Stephanie
Hi Stephanie,
Yes, I had to come and check out your new site and applaud your efforts in helping the black cats of the world. They are like little panthers, to me. My black cat Bear has the most gentle spirit and he is so loving and playful. He wouldn’t hurt a fly, literally. His sister, Oreo, will catch and kill bugs, superations not Bear he wants to play with them. So, I think if people would put all the negative things they have learned through movies, tv, and superstitions they would find that black cats are the complete opposite. Stephanie, great site and Have a very Happy New Year!!! Also, a special hello to the inspiration for this site, Midnight, stay purrfect 🙂
Carol
Carol:
Thank you so much for your super kind and supportive reply. Yes, black cats are like mini panthers. People who adopt black cats can tell everyone they adopted a mini panther. I think it is so cute that your Bear has a sibling named Oreo, because as mentioned in my post, Oreo was Midnight’s mother whom was a stray that befriended my parents and made herself at home with them. I also think it is cute how Bear will like to play with little bugs. Thanks again and I will tell Midnight you gave her a special hello, because as you and I said, the inspiration for this website.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
i love black cats, i had one called Pisi, i think cats are the most beautiful pet, but also there are many things to learn from them, their personality is unique.
Hi Roxen:
Yes, cats are very unique and very beautiful. Your black cat Pisi sounds like a wonderful cat. I am sure she brought much move and joy into your home as will any cat. Thanks for visiting today. Please come back and read more of my posts, because this is only the first of what will be many.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
This is such an interesting and unique idea for a website.
I agree that the black cat has a bit of a bad rap and is often associated with bad luck and superstition, unfortunately. I personally love black cats. I think they’re beautiful and I’ve owned a few and have known others who have owned them over the years.
I sincerely hope your website can dispel a few myths.
Hi Damen:
Thanks for reading my first post on my black cat website and leaving a wonderful reply. You are right about black cats getting a bad rap and being associated with black magic and bad luck and all of that. The black cats you had I am sure brought much joy and love into your home. Black cats can show just as much love as any other cat. It is a shame and yes, I am sure I will be able to help dispel those awful myths about our gorgeous black cats.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
Hello Setphhill,
I think black cats have always got an unfair superstitious reputation. Black cats are no different than any other cat.
But, we live in world in which people have deep rooted believes and perceptions. Furthermore, it seems that anything that is seen as bad or evil is associated with the color Black:
• Black Magic
• Bad guys wear black
• The old mafia dudes were the black hand
• We get black balled
• Blackmailed
• Blacklisted
• Black rain
• And, so on……
I guess that’s just the way it is until people change their perception of things……which I don’t think will happen anytime soon.
Hi SanShar:
You know what. I never thought of that, but yes, you are right. The color black is always associated with negativity and bad things. We were black to funerals. And yes, the mafia duds always wore black suits and black sunglasses. People who do not wish to be seen when in the car have black tinted windows and everyone always assumes the worst of them.
Thank you so much for checking out my post and for your awesome insight. You are so right and yes, you are probably right about things not changing anytime soon unfortunately. Please come back and visit again as this website grows and develops.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
Sadly some people want an excuse to be cruel. Others want an excuse to be scared. Why do people like to be scared? Others are, unfortunately excited by superstitious activity, learn to participate as young people with their friends, thinking it is cool. Education, education please! Teaching values and kindness to animals by our families is needed. Little kids will try a little unkind act to an animal if not watched.
I have a middle child brother who, while young, was caught putting our kitty into a pillowcase and swinging it around. I protested loudly! He was disciplined and taught better values. He is very kind to animals and has had numerous cats with whom he is very tender toward and grieves when they pass! I was not the kindest, either, as a very young child! I have vague memories of teasing the cat or dog, but later realizing this was wrong.
I once rescued a cat from two boys as I ran toward my bus leaving a park during a school outing. I took the cat, scolding the boys, larger than me! I hid the cat on the bus with the help of a friend. I took this cat home and my parents allowed me to keep him.
We must find ways to counteract wrong and I really appreciate this website.
Thanks, Lynne
Hi Lynne:
I loved the stories you have shared here about how your middle child was swinging a kitten in a pillow case and about how you rescued a cat when you were little from two lager boys. When it comes to cats I too have no problem standing up for them even if the other person is bigger and stronger than me. I recall I did similar things when I was young and saw some mean bullies picking on a cat. They were a couple high school boys chasing and cornering a small cat and yelling at it. I was only in middle school at the time, but I went over and shoved one of the boys really hard and he fell to the ground and scolded him and then picked up the cat and cradled it in my arms and carried it to the front office where one of the school secretaries fell in love with it and took it to home with her.
You are right about when kids are young they seem to have a mean streak in them for whatever reason. I love kids. I am a parent myself and have two grown kids who LOVE cats just as much as I do and are super gentle to them, but I raised them that way. I agree it comes down to good parenting, education, and teaching proper values. If we can do that for our kids, I think it might be a better world for cats.
Thanks again Lynne. I hope to see you again real soon on my website.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
Stephanie, you are doing a god job by educating the public about negativity. Being prejudiced and judgemental is only because people are ignorant, and ignorance can only be cured by open-mindedness through education. Negativity about black cats is one of such stereotype that needs to be erased. information.
Thank you Lanu for your comment. It is my hope that this website will be educational for many and will bring awareness to the fact that black cats can and will love you just like any other cat. They will not bring you bad luck or anything like that. Thanks Lanu. Please come back and visit from time to time.
Steph, lovely post but some people should get out the antihistamine before the black cat cuddles!
The thing I find amazing is how so many people are still so superstitious. Mind you others can always find something or someone to blame problems on.
And yet what is the fashion statement of so many. Black clothes! Boring I know but there you go.
All cats are lovely. Some aren’t friendly, as they have had the misfortune to be feral. Usually this is through dumb people not desexing and dumping unwanted cats. And then they breed and they have never had the chance to love and be loved by we cat people.
Our only boy, Oscar, was living feral. I think he was dumped as he certainly responded to ‘kitty’ when at last he came close enough to talk to him. We had decided to tempt him in because he was a gorgeous tabby and he never annoyed the girls.
He was four square and solid muscle and when desexed he never lost this and always chased the feral toms off. Another great trait. He was the most loving cat and all I can say is that someone missed out on a great cat friendship.
All our girls wandered in except our current girl, Katie. She we got from the Cat Home. And as I type this she is sitting on both my arms as her sole contribution!
I will be back to visit you and your lovely black cat again.
Ciao
Helen
Hi Helen:
So great seeing you here. Thanks for visiting my new website. I know we are pretty good friends on another online platform we both belong to, so thank you very much for coming here. I love the pictures you have sent me of your beautiful cats. Your pictures and your stories are part of the reason and inspiration for my second post that I wrote today called Share Your Story. I was so moved by the number of people telling me their fabulous stores about their cats, black and otherwise, that I thought why not do an article asking for these awesome stories to which I will have them appear on this website so other people can read them and see that black cats are not the evil beasts that some make them out to be.
You have a really good point about when people just abandon their cats because they lose interest in them or they peed on their favorite rug or whatever and those cats become feral and scared of people because of the way they have been treated by humans in the past. Many of those feral cats are black and therefore are uncomfortable around people and they blame it on the breed or fur color instead of seeing the bigger picture and that is it is the people who abandoned their cats who made them that way. All cats are bore ready to love and ready to be loved, but if they never get a chance to meet a family or a single individual who will allow them to have that experience, then that will affect their personality. If we as humans were never loved by anyone, it would affect us and we too would become bitter and angry. So, great points there Helen. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Stephanie
I’ve always known black cats to be the most elegant of the species! They move so gracefully, they’re like queens and kings, and the others often seem like kiddies in comparison!
Great cat info, never seen a whole site on this before- wow!:-)
Cheers,
Therese
Hi Therese:
So great to see you. Thanks for stopping by. I was hoping to see you because we know one another in other platforms online. And yes, I completely agree with you. Black cats seem to walk with so much more grace and ease and have this majestic look to them. They do look like kings and queens when they walk, more so than other cats, I agree 100%.
And yes it is my hope that I have tapped into something rather unique here. I have read, for instance, lots of articles on various pet related websites talking about the misconceptions and misunderstandings about black cats but never do I think has there been too many complete websites dedicated to the topic of black cats and how they are so discriminated against when it comes to cats being adopted in animal shelters. Black cats are often times the ones that need to be put down because too many people think that if they adopt a black cat, bad luck will come to them and that could not be any further from the truth. That is complete rubbish. So I do think that doing a full website solely dedicated to this topic will help get the word out.
Thanks again Therese and I am sure I will see you around online within the other platforms we are affiliated with.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
I used to have a lot of cats when I was younger, actually when I had more time to take care of them. But I never had a black cat before. Perhaps I was influenced about the things I read and the negative perceptions that were formed in me about black cats.
You have a very unique site and I love it that you are on a mission to dispel the negativity that people attach to these furry creatures. I am for animal rights myself and I do think that all animals, whatever color or breed they are have the right to co-exist peacefully with us humans.
I have bookmarked your site mainly because I want to be educated about black cats and develop an appreciation for them. Thanks for this site.
Hi Kathy:
Thanks so much for visiting and for checking out my website. One way to keep informed if you wish is to sign up for my newsletter because I will be sending out announcements about new posts and things like that. Have a great day Kathy and I hope you do decide to sign up for the newsletter.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
Hi Stephanie
I have been a dog type person for the first fifty years of my life … But recently my sister got a job posting, as a military, in a foreign country.
She wanted to keep his cat but it was impossible to bring it in her new home. She “pretended” that it was a really good cat. So I decided to ‘babysit” the cat for three years…
And his cat, named ” Camille”, is one of kind cat, believe me. He is not black but he changes my perception about cats. He almost talks 🙂 He likes to be part of the crowd of people.
He spent the Christmas night with us in the center of the room watching every single of us. When he is at my home he follows me everywhere I go in the home. He sits beside me waiting for my next move 🙂
During the summer I used to bring him, with my car, to my parents home to play on their land. Then he went back by himself to my parents home. So every morning he takes a daily 15 minutes walk to my parents home to visit them. At 19h00 PM he always asks my parents to go outside to come back at my home.
He hates snow, so as soon as it started to fall snow he stays inside for the winter season. I guess he will be an “happy camper” in the next spring time to come.
Cheers, and long live to our cats, black or white :). Jeff
Hi Jeff:
Camille sounds like an extremely intelligent cat. She obviously loves you very much and the two of you have a very close relationship. So when you sister returns from her military post, is there going to be some tension between the two of as to you gets to keep Camille? 🙂 Thank you for sharing.
Have a Happy New Year!
Stephanie
Hi Stephanie !
I’m a dog person all my life and got my first cat about 3 years ago for my daughter, 14,maybe 15 then. We were soon unexpectedly forced to take the 2 from her mothers house. Then in the spring my daughter gave away a litter of kittens from the barn. A very noble deed except the girl who claimed the last one never came to pick him up.
A month later I was taking him to be spayed/ neutered. He was named “Lucifer” and is still here. We’ve been through some tough times and lost one girl (my favorite, of course) last winter. Then this year we lost the other girl on Christmas eve. Myself and both kids stayed with her her last hours.
So hard to lose pets/family members like that.
Now we are down to 2 and the kids are pretty sure the older male is 14 or 15. At this point I hope he makes 20 as he’s pretty cool too, although one of the kids will hopefully take both as they move out.
Guess I’m a cat person now too, but no black ones……… Yet .
Thanks for sharing your story of how you went from being a dog person to a cat person. You have been converted. 🙂 Your cats sound wonderful. I lost count of how many cats you have with all of the additions from your daughter’s mother’s house, and a litter from the barn, etc. but it sounds like they are all cute and loving and I am sure you will someday get a black cat and love her just as much as the other cats.
Hi Stephanie,
What a unique and interesting concept for a website. Love the pics! I’ve had many cats of various colors over the years. Our favorites were 2 totally black cats that we adopted when they were kittens and only a few weeks old. We had them for twelve years. They were incredibly affectionate cats and always something of a conversation piece. Although they were litter mates, one had a very short and sleek coat while the other had long hair. They were inseparable, so you always had to be prepared to pet and cuddle two of them. It got interesting but fun 🙂 I’ll be looking forward to reading the stories that are shared!
Hi Linda:
Great to hear from you. Your two black cats sound wonderful and I am sure they brought much love to her home. You mentioned the stories to be shared, and I would love it if you would be willing to share the story. You can use the same story you were talking about just now. If you are interested, send a photo of your two black kitties, with their names and a story and it can be anything. You can send it to owner@blackcatlover.com
Thank you Linda,
Sincerely,
Stephanie
I love your site! I don’t have any black cats but I have had many other colors and want a black one someday as well. My Mom was allergic to cats and struggled with it during my childhood as well. My husband is also allergic but would never ever consider giving up our babies. He is madly in love with them!
He used to live on allergy pills but got sinus surgery this year to correct a deviated septum and now he no longer needs the pills! It has been wonderful. He can kiss and cuddle them all day long!
Thank you for your awesome site and helping black cats everywhere!
Hi Jessica:
That is great that your husband was able to get surgery and is now able to cuddle and play with your furry babies all day! Many thanks for sharing!
Sincerely,
Stephanie
I’m definitely a black cat lover! I’ve owned a bunch of cats in my lifetime too and they were actually all BLACK cats. I’m not sure why but in my childhood we always rescued the black cats from the SPCA. One of my cats actually lived to 17 years old.. she just passed this past year. 🙁
Hi Gabriela:
I am so sorry to hear of your recent loss. Seventeen years is such a long time for a cat to live. I think that is great that you and your family always adopted black cats from the SPCA, because black cats often times tend not to be adopted due to the bad wrap they have. Thank you for doing your part. Have a great day and once again, so sorry for your loss.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
