Black Cats are much easier to find in the white snow. While other feline owners of fluffy white Persians are searching for their cat in the snow, you will quickly be able to spot your black cat.

A black cat will match any décor you have. You won’t have to get your sofa reupholstered when you adopt a black cat because she will match.

Black cats look like little panthers. You can tell your friends you adopted a baby panther and watch their eyes bug out.

Black goes with everything. No matter what you wear, your black cat will look good in your arms.

Black cats are abandoned and found in trash cans and dumpsters more often than any other color of cat. Black cats are least likely to find their fur-ever home and be adopted into loving homes.

You are still sitting there?? Get your butt off that chair and beat feet to your nearest animal shelter and find your new furry black companion.
Hi Stephanie,
Just gorgeous! I think I might just have to get a black cat! I hadn’t realised that black cats are more likely to be dumped than other colours, and less likely to find their forever home.. Is that because of superstition and people think they’re bad luck, or is there some other explanation you know of? Are there any specific breeds of black cat, other than panther ;), or are black cats all combinations of other cats?
Thanks for making me think about black cats!
Hi Rachel:
You have asked excellent questions and yes, one the main reasons that black cats are less likely to be adopted is due to the superstition and myths surrounding black cats. That is the main mission of this website is to try and dispel those myths.
There are many different breeds of black cats. There are approximately 21 breeds of cats that can be solid black.
Thank you for visiting my website. I hope I have inspired you to think more about black cats.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
Wow what a great article about black cats.
In my house in the Provence we used to have a lot of cats as well as black cats.
Even though some people don’t like them because of the famous superstition, I find them very charming.
Do you have other favorite cat breeds?
Thank you Asen for the comment. I am glad you enjoyed the article about the top five reasons to adopt a black cat. That “famous superstition” is the main reason I developed this website. The primary mission of this site is to dispel that superstition.
As far as your question about other favorite cat breeds, black cats are not one particular breed. In fact, black cats can be many different breeds. Read here to learn more facts about black cats.
Thank you for visiting and have a great day! I hope you return soon.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
Such a fun and entertaining post. I have several friends on FB that have black cats and they are always posting pictures of black cats to each other. I’m now thinking it’s some sort of black feline club and that a black cat is something special even though people associate black cats with being bad luck.
Hi Jackie:
Thank you so much for the comment. There are lots of Facebook who have black cats, I being one of them as well as many of my friends. There is something neat about black cats and yes, I do think those who own black cats have a special appreciation for them. And, yes they are unfortunately associated with bad luck which is one of the missions of this website – to dispel that myth. Thanks for visiting and hope to see you again!
Sincerely,
Stephanie
We got three cats at home and one of them just happens to be black and his name is Ricardo, he’s a fluffy black persian cross.
He looks rather similar to the one in the main picture and he’s a lovely cat, very sociable and he likes the attention. I do like all the reasons you have listed for owning a black cat, especially where it says they look like little panthers, well they do.
We didn’t get him from a shelter but through a newspaper ad, so at least we can say we’ve done our bit in getting a black cat according to your post lol.
Hi Adrian:
Ricardo sounds like a great cat. If you would be interested in sharing more about how special Ricardo is, feel free to send an email to owner@blackcatlover.com with a story about Ricardo, and I will post it on Share Your Story. I enjoy getting awesome stories from other black cat lovers. Thank you for stopping by and I hope to see you soon.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
Hey, I really like your article on top 5 reasons to adopt a black cat. But, one that needs to be added to the list is black cats are perfect for Halloween. I always think of Halloween when I hear “black cats.” Most of the times I see black cats they seem to have yellow eyes which I do like. However, I do like black cats with blue eyes.
A quick question about black cat’s eye color, though. What eye color do most black cats have? I have also seen them with green eyes, too.
I honestly never thought I would find an article quite like this one! This is excellent, I found it to be extremely hysterical, I am currently laughing while writing this xD!
As an animal lover I found your last reason the most touching, animals and humans are all sentient beings using the same planet as a living ground, I feel black cats are as beautiful as any other cat!
I support you in what you’re doing, it is a fantastic cause! Keep up the great work, I cannot wait to read your next article,
Tyson 🙂
Hi Tyson:
I am so glad I was able to bring laughter to your day. I am pleased my article was a joy to read and you thought it was excellent. Many thanks for the compliment. I have attempted to make people realize how silly the myths about black cats are by bringing humor and a bit of harmless sarcasm to the table. This is a unique website with a unique mission I realize, but I feel strongly about the importance of educating people on the truth about black cats by presenting facts and hoping that will encourage to go their local animal shelter and adopt a black cat, because I guarantee it will be the best decision they will have made when it comes to choosing their new pet.
Thanks again for the kind compliments. You mentioned you cannot wait to read my next article, so have you read Share Your Story? That is an article which contains black cat stories people have sent in. They are enduring and will warm your heart.
Have a great day!
Stephanie
Actually, I would say that any pet is cute and adorable.
But unfortunately, for Chinese, Black cat is a sign that not very good because Chinese culture thinks that black cat can bring bad luck.
But for me, I don’t care.
Hi Dino:
You are right that any pet is cute and adorable. I agree totally. I have heard what you have confirmed about the Chinese culture believing that black cats can bring bad luck, thus, the reason I try and convince others to think differently through this website. This website’s mission is to dispel that superstitious thinking and make people realize that black cats are no different than any other cat. They can love you and cuddle you just like any other cat. Black cats bring happiness, not bad luck.
It sounds like you don’t care to listen to that superstition and that is great. Keep having those positive thoughts. Perhaps you can invite some of your Chinese friends who do believe the superstition to my website and have them take a look around and read some of the myths and facts I have listed about black cats. They could also read some of the stories people have sent me about their black cat.
Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
Hello,
I always did feel black cats got a bad rap. I’m sure why, but I’ve heard horrible superstitious claims about that put them in an unfavorable position.
When you thing about it; “Black” has always, somehow, represented unfounded bad things in this world. For example: Black Magic; Blackballed, Black Mail, Black List; Black Monday (Wall Street Crash).
Why do we associate white with good/pure and black with bad/evil?
Thank you for your comment and yes that is a good question. Why does our culture associate the color of black with evil? And white as being pure and good? It has been ingrained in our society through media and other venues. And yes, black cats do get a very bad rap.
Steph
I love cats.
I am living with a cat right now (not black) and she was coming around and trying snoop in my room but I was kicking her out.
Eventually, I just caved and let her in and after a week she lost interest…I think the mystery was gone.
Now , I kinda miss her…
Funny how that works!
Hi Steven:
Maybe you missing the cat is a sign you should go out and adopt a cat, perhaps I hope a black cat. Thank you for visiting.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
I LOVE black cats, even though a lot of people think they are scary, they are actually really cute. And your reasons that you outlined only go and prove even more WHY we should be getting one. I’ve always wanted a cat but never actually got one. I have no idea why not, but your website just makes me want one so bad now, especially because they look like a baby panther, as you so bluntly put it, haha.
Thanks for the great article, I can tell you love your black cats. Great job!
-Brandon
Hi there,
I love your site great pictures and stories, the first year I was married my husband surprised me with a black kitten. She was awesome and full of personality. Played hide and seek and followed me from room to room.
We loved her so much we got a black puppy to match
Thanks for sparking a great memory!!!’
Hi Colleen:
Your little black kitten sounds adorable and I love that you got a black puppy to match. It is like having four-legged twins! Thank you for sharing this story. I am delighted to have sparked such a fantastic memory you have.
Sincerely
Stephanie
I never believed in myths. I just love to have a black cat or dog. Black is a beauty. That’s the only reason why I choose black.
My last dog was a black dachshund. She passed away a couple of years ago. Sadly, my apartment wouldn’t allow pets at any kind. But I think I can smuggle black goldfish inside. Hmmm….
Hi Arief:
I am glad to hear you do not believe in the myths about black cats. I am so sorry to hear about your black dachshund. It is so hard to lose a pet. I have been through it myself and it is rough. I too used to live in an apartment that did not allow pets of any kind and I really hated it because I believe animals are therapeutic and help us deal with the daily stresses of life. I am not sure where you live, but in the United States at least, you can get a letter from your doctor saying your cat or dog is a “therapy animal” and that protects you legally and allows you to have your beloved companion with you.
Thank you for stopping Arief. I am sure we will hear more from you.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
Hello Stephanie,
I don’t have cats but a good friend of mine does. She doesn’t have black ones but they do look absolutely adorable!!!
Maybe I can get one and tell people it’s a baby panther lol…really liked that one!
Ravi
Hi Ravi:
I am glad you like the idea of adopting a black cat and telling your friends you adopted a baby panther. Watch their eyes get big! 🙂
Sincerely,
Stephanie
Hi Stephanie,
I love Cats. I have one white and one black cat at my house. Like you said, black cats are easy to spot (except in the night lol) and are very cute. My wife prefers white cats but not sure why. I’m going to show her your post and convince her to get a black cat. Thank you..!
Regards,
Manivannan Y
Hi Manivannan:
I am sure your wife will see how special black cats can be when she reads the article. Thank you so much for stopping and checking out the top 5 reasons to adopt a black cat.

Hi
One of my relatives just recently adopted a really cute black cat, and he has been a joyous addition to the family. The fact is that black cats are just as loving and playful as any other cat and should not be disregarded just because there are myths attached to their fur color.
Still just a kitten, but loves to get up to all sorts of mischief. Do you recommend giving the cat milk at all? Not too sure about that one so we have left it for now.
I look forward to some of your future posts.
Cheers
Hi Chris:
The new black kitten your relative adopted sounds absolutely adorable. In answer to your question, after a kitten is weaned from its mother, milk is not necessary in the kitten’s diet. The kitten’s ability to digest lactose (the sugar in milk) reduces. They can even become intolerant to ordinary cows’ milk, resulting in the diarrhea. That being said, you know how every cat’s immune system is different, just like with people. We have been giving our black cat Midnight milk for years and she loves it and she has never been sick from it. She also drinks lots of water and both wet and dry food.
I am hoping you will come back soon to check out future posts. Have a great day!
Sincerely,
Stephanie
I love cats a lot and though the color does not matter much to me, I think many people out there have the wrong idea that black cats bring bad luck. They are cats, they are cute and I see no reason why one should not adopt them. They are really cute and you have given all the right reasons for adoption.
Thank you Shrey. You are right about some people having the complete wrong idea and superstitions about black cats. There are many myths out there about these precious little creature. And yes, you are also right in that they are very cute. I hope you continue to follow my posts. You can subscribe to my newsletter if you wish. Have a great day!
Hey Stephanie! Thanks so much for promoting black cats. When I was a child, my closest companion was a female black cat named Schwartzy. That’s German for Blacky. She was the sweetest cat in the world. As luck would have it, I’m searching for a companion for my present cat and I think I’m going to get a black one. My cat is white so I can call them my little salt and pepper shakers!
Hi B.A. Scott!
Pleasure to meet you. Schwartzy sounded like he was a really special black cat when you were little. You were very luck to have him in your like. I think the idea of adopting a black cat to be a companion to your white cat would be an ideal match so you have a perfect salt and pepper combo. I love the idea! Good luck! Come back soon and let me know how it turns out!
Aw, I love black cats! My childhood cat was all black and she was the sweetest most loyal cat ever. It makes me so sad to think that people abandon them because of their color. We are cat lovers around here and to us all cats are beautiful! Thanks for a great website, I’ll be spending more time looking around!
Thank you so much for visiting. I would love to hear more about your childhood kitty who was black. What was his or her name? I am sure you have many happy memories with her.
Hello,
Very good article post coming from experience and from the heart, I am not a cat owner dogs are my companion pet only because I am allergic to cats.
Black cats do have a bad reputation and are less wanted by people looking for a cat, I often wonder is this from the old thinking black cats are bad luck and owned by witches?
Hi Jeffrey:
Thank you for reading my article about the top five reasons for adopting a black cat. I too like dogs even though I am a cat owner. I think both dogs and cats make wonderful companions and offer great benefits to anyone looking to adopt.
In answer to your question, yes, the Myths out there surrounding black cats are the primary reasons people choose to not adopt a black cat. It is because of their association with witches and such things like that.
Sorry to hear about your allergies to cats. I too am a sufferer of allergies and it can be rough.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
