Whenever Friday the 13th rolls around, pictures of black cats begin popping up everywhere. Black cats over the years have been doused with a witch’s brew of superstition. The many myths surrounding black cats have resulted in things like cult horror films. Do you remember the Anna Faris vs. black cat fight scene in Scary Movie 2? Society’s unending portrayal of black cats as unlucky or evil continue to flood the media. But here is one of the facts regarding black cats:
There are currently over 80 million black cats who belong to a U.S. household. Thus, millions of people love and happily share their homes with black cats.
Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011) was considered one of the last, if not the last, major stars to have come out of the old Hollywood studio system. She was one of my idols and she too had a special affection for cats as well as other animals since she was a little girl.
Robert Redford who in 1995 was chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history and founder of the Sundance Film Festival. In 2016, Redford turned 80 years old but that was slowing him down as he promoted his new hit movie Pete’s Dragon.
Having been raised with both cats and dogs in his home, Morgan Freeman is a huge advocate for growing up with animals. Freeman quotes, “I think that it’s more than important for kids to grow up with pets”, he says, “A loving pet is the most loving you’re ever going to get.”
I like the picture of John Travolta and his black cat because in a way, the cat’s expression on his face resembles Travolta’s movie persona as being the “cool dude”.
If celebrities can pay no mind to the black-cat-as-evil myth, so can the rest of us. So the next time you watch a movie or TV show where the featured black cat is associated with witchcraft, remember how movie stars like John Travolta, Morgan Freeman, Robert Redford and Elizabeth Taylor care nothing what superstitious people say about black cats.
So, if you are in the market for a new kitty, go down to your local animal shelter and adopt a black cat, so you can say, “I am as cool as John Travolta, because I too have a black cat just like he did.”
